William Butler Yeats one wrote:
I whispered, ‘I am too young,’
And then, ‘I am old enough’;
Wherefore I threw a penny
To find out if I might love.
‘Go and love, go and love, young man,
If the lady be young and fair.’
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
I am looped in the loops of her hair.
I got to thinking of this poem the other day, this stanza in particular. How many times have we treated God the way the author treated the penny. He threw a penny into a wishing well to find out if he would ever find love but when he got his answer – He knew he already had it. How many times have we asked God for things that we already have? We ask for God to take care of our loved one, but He already is. We ask God to show us the way we should go in a decision we are making, when He already has.
Wouldn’t it be better if we prayed the way Jesus said, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” – Mark 11:24.
How about we pray, “Thank you, God, for taking care of my loved ones.” Or “Thank you, God, for showing me the way in this decision. Your will be done.”
Just a thought.
Peace be with you.
