During this time of Carnevale, we are faced again with the idea of masks. Who are we behind the mask? Are we hypocrites? Are we the people we portray ourselves to be? Jesus talked many times about how hypocrisy is rampant. Do we want to be the Pharisee or the publican?
Now, mistakenly, many people seem to think that if they do right and be a good Christian they have no personality. They seem to be under the impression that being a holy person makes you person-less. I don’t understand this. It is like saying all murderers are the same. Many people murder but they don’t all have the same personality. Jesus does not want you to be a mindless drone, some sort of a spiritual zombie. He wants you to be perfect just as God is perfect. Seems like a pretty tall order. But what does He mean by perfect He means the perfect you. There has never been and there will never be another you – so why spend your time pretending to be someone else? Why were the masks?
Many Catholics say you should be like this or that saint. Many Protestants say you should be like Jesus. Jesus said, you should be perfect. So ask yourself, if you were perfect, sinless and holy? What would you do? Would you tell white lies? Probably not. Would you joke around and have fun? Why not? I personally believe that Jesus had fun in His earthly life, which by no means negates His Holiness. It makes Him who He is. Who are you? Who are you when you are perfect, and perfectly you? A little something to think about.
Peace be with you.
