Starting Four Sundays before Christmas and Lasting until Christmas Eve
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14
Happy New Year! Advent starts the Christian New Year. It is a time of waiting. It is a time of reflection. It is a time to get your spiritual house in order. Advent is the first season of the year and it is outside of ordinary time and space. It is a spiritual season. During Advent we spiritually prepare for the coming of Christ, both looking back to His Birth and looking forward to His Second Coming. Remember we are outside of time and space, so looking forward to both is easily doable.
But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore also be ready, for in an hour that you don’t expect, the Son of Man will come. Matthew 24:43-44
During this time we take opportunities to strive to be better spiritually. It is very much like making New Year’s Resolutions, only instead of focusing on the physical (I want to get into shape, I want to get out of debt, I want to quit smoking, etc.) we focus on the spiritual (I want to pray more, I want to spend more time meditating with God, I want to stop telling little white lies, etc.) It is a time to focus on God, assess our lives and steer yourself back on the path.
But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only. Matthew 24:36
Think of it like this. Say that someone told you that He was going to come in on the plane but they didn’t tell you when He was coming. It could be this second. It could be a million years from now. You don’t know. So Advent is like getting ready for Him to come and then going down to the airport and waiting as every plane comes in. You watch for every person that comes off the plane. Is that Him? Is that Him? You search every face. Finally, you see Him! You look, then He looks. He smiles, then you smile. You wave, then He waves. Soon you are both running into each other’s big bear hug with laughter and tears of joy. The searching the other faces is Advent. When you see Him, it’s Christmas and when He comes again.
Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness, Please send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Your Coming. For those who are in despair we ask that you show them Your Hope. For those who are lonely please help them to remember Your Love. For those whose hearts are heavy please help them to find Your Joy. For those who are anxious please lead them to Your Peace. We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light. To you we joyfully cry, “Come Lord Jesus!” Amen.
Peace be with you.
