Turn on the news and the world is coming apart at the seams. On the news we are living on the edge of an ecological disaster that will destroy the planet, criminals are lurking around every corner, sexism, racism, and World War 3 is only seconds away. Worry. Fear. Despair.
But these are real problems, you say. Yes, they are. But what will fear of them accomplish? Let’s take just one of those problems as an example.
Are there ecological problems? Yes. Well, quit complaining and fix it! If you are worried about it, walk – don’t drive, eat local, recycle. Don’t twist yourself up inside about what everyone else is doing. You have control over no one but yourself! Fearing that the Earth will become unlivable does not help, it hurts. Fearing what will happen does only two things.
One, it robs you of now. You are sitting at home and worrying and taking in all of the horrors that people have visited on this planet via news, documentaries, videos and blogs. This helps absolutely nothing. The air is bad. Well, get up and go plant a tree. It’s a great filter. You see, you could be out enjoying the planet by taking a hike or going to a park. If you go and see trash, pick it up. Being out there in the world gives you an opportunity to help.
Let me tell you a personal story. I was working at this company whose office was on the edge of a canyon. One day, I saw this truck pull up and start dumping construction debris in the canyon. I told my co-workers who came over and watched out the window. They all talked among themselves. “That isn’t right.” “You see, no one cares about the green spaces.” “That’s just corporate greed destroying our planet.” I thought they were going to help me do something. They weren’t. I, not wanting to go up against a large group of construction workers by myself, took down the license plate and called the county.
My co-workers were in a panic! They informed me that we, as a company, were going to get in trouble because I was being rash! Everyone will know it was someone from our company who called because we were the only ones on that side of the building! We might lose our lease if it was the landlord who was doing the dumping! I was going to get fired!
My co-workers were living in fear.
And if it was up to them, the canyon would be polluted. If I got fired, then I got fired. I can get another job but I can’t just get another planet. Turns out it was the landlord of the building and yes, they knew it came from our company. But no, I didn’t get fired and they couldn’t kick us out of our lease. The county made them clean it up, gave them a stiff fine and put up signs for no dumping. No one is going to be doing that again. I think it was worth it.
The second thing that fearing what will happen will do is overwhelm you and lead to despair. The environment is too big of a problem. Stopping one tiny area from being dumped in won’t help. Let me tell you another story.
A young girl was walking along a beach upon which thousands of starfish had been washed up during a terrible storm. When she came to each starfish, she would pick it up, and throw it back into the ocean.
She had been doing this for some time when a man approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t make a difference!”
The girl bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “It made a difference to that one!” — Adapted from The Star Thrower by Loren C. Eiseley
So why all the fear mongering? I may be looking a little too deeply at the issue, as I usually do. But it seems to me to be this fear mongering just another symptom of a lack of faith. If your heart is filled with Love then there is no room for fear. Demons, the Fallen, all the negativity in the world, they want you to be afraid. They want your fear. Fear makes them strong. Fear leads you astray. They want you to despair and feel everyone around you is sexist, racist, ect. Because then you will fear your fellow man. You will not love your neighbor.
Love makes them weak, because God is Love. You can’t make someone fear if they have nothing to fear.
The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? – Psalm 118:6
Turn off the static of all that fear mongering noise. The devil has no place in your life. Quit looking for faults, racism, sexism, ect. There is no reward for being a victim or finding the most faults, but there is a punishment. It makes you fearful and full of despair.
Fill yourself with God’s Love. No more fear! Go ahead, laugh in the face of your fear! Put your hands on your hips, throw back your head and laugh like a superhero. HAHAHAHA!
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. – 2 Timothy 1:7
Now get out there and do something!
Peace be with you.
